Camelthorn Lodge is located on the southeastern edge of Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, within a private concession bordering the vast Ngamo Plains. The accommodation blends harmoniously into an ancient acacia forest – a setting that exudes peace and authenticity. The lodge is located inside the Imvelo Ngamo Rhino Sanctuary – and our rhinos are known to wander past the lodge!
Accommodation at Camelthorn Lodge
The lodge offers eight spacious forest villas that combine luxury with an immersive nature experience. Each villa features an open fireplace, an en-suite bathroom with bathtub and shower, a minibar, a ceiling fan, and an upper-level gallery with a daybed and hammock – perfect for relaxing under the African night sky. Four of the villas even include a small plunge pool on the upper balcony. At the heart of the property stands the main lodge building, thatched and built around a magnificent Camelthorn tree. Inside, guests will find cosy lounges with fireplaces, a bar, Wi-Fi, mobile reception, and a small plunge pool for refreshing breaks between safari activities.
Activities and Excursions at Camelthorn Lodge
Guests can explore Hwange National Park on guided game drives by day and night or discover the smaller wonders of the bush on walking safaris. A unique highlight is a concealed underground hide, designed in the shape of a termite mound, which allows close-up views of elephants and other wildlife at the waterhole. Full-day excursions take visitors to remote waterholes far from the usual routes and include a picnic in the wilderness. The lodge also offers visits to nearby villages and schools, providing authentic insights into the daily life of the local community.
Imvelo has partnered with the Ngamo community to establish a rhino sanctuary on their land. The first two residents, Thusa and Kusasa, are guarded around the clock by the dedicated rangers of the Cobras Community Wildlife Protection Unit. Guests are welcomed at headquarters, where they receive an introduction to the mission and vision of this award-winning and pioneering project. They also learn about Imvelo’s wider conservation and community commitments before heading out to encounter the rhinos in their protected habitat.
