Hideaways Bumbusi Wilderness Camp is located in a remote concession in the northern part of Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. The approximately 80,000-hectare wilderness area is characterised by river valleys, granite hills, gorges, and densely vegetated riverine zones. The camp is situated near Bumbusi National Monument. The region bears traces of human settlement dating back several thousand years. Historic stone ruins, Nambya rock engravings, and fossilised forests provide fascinating insights into the history of this remarkable landscape.
Accommodation at Hideaways Bumbusi Wilderness Camp
Nestled beneath towering mahogany and jackalberry trees, the camp blends seamlessly into its natural surroundings. Natural springs and shady lawns attract a remarkable variety of wildlife, with elephants frequently visiting the camp, particularly during the dry season.
The camp was created through the careful restoration of a historic property. Its original stone walls have been preserved and complemented by traditional materials such as thatch and canvas, creating an authentic safari atmosphere. Accommodation consists of seven freestanding stone-and-thatch chalets arranged around the camp's manicured lawns. Each chalet features an en-suite bathroom, comfortable sleeping quarters and views of the surrounding greenery. Five chalets are furnished with twin beds, while two offer queen-size beds and an additional bathtub. One chalet can be adapted with bunk beds to accommodate families.
The heart of the camp is the open-plan main lodge, which includes the dining area as well as inviting indoor and outdoor lounge spaces. A small library provides a peaceful retreat, while the campfire seating area becomes the social hub in the evenings. The swimming pool is fed by a nearby natural spring and blends beautifully into the landscape, surrounded by expansive shaded areas beneath the mature trees.
Activities and tours at Hideaways Bumbusi Wilderness Camp
Game drives and guided walking safaris with experienced guides depart directly from the camp. Depending on the season, excursions explore the scenic Bumbusi Gorge, follow the Deka River or visit natural waterholes, offering outstanding opportunities to encounter the region's diverse wildlife and flora.
In addition to exceptional game viewing, guests can visit the nearby Bumbusi Ruins, centuries-old stone structures that tell the story of a long-lost civilisation. Few safari camps in Zimbabwe combine remarkable wildlife, cultural heritage and such varied landscapes in one destination. Accessible only by four-wheel drive, the lodge remains a genuine hidden gem for adventurous travellers seeking an exclusive wilderness experience.
