Jozibanini is located in the vast southwestern region of Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe, within a remote private concession. The nearest tourist location is over four hours away, making this one of the park’s most secluded safari destinations. Access is either via Libuti Airstrip with a short transfer, or by a spectacular six-hour 4x4 drive from its sister camps Bomani, Camelthorn, or Nehimba – including a so-called Pump Run, during which waterholes in the park are replenished – a fascinating and unique experience for guests.
Jozibanini has a remarkable history. In the early 2000s, the ranger station here was abandoned due to a lack of park funding, leaving the south and west of Hwange largely unpatrolled. In 2013, the area suffered severe elephant poaching incidents. Imvelo Safari Lodges responded by establishing an outpost in Jozibanini. Today, the “Jozi” project protects hundreds of kilometers of remote parkland and supplies water during the dry season to around a quarter of Hwange’s thirsty wildlife.
Accommodation at Jozibanini Tented Camp
The camp consists of only five tents, each set on raised wooden platforms beneath camelthorn trees. Every tent has an en-suite bathroom with bucket shower and flush toilet, and the beds are on wheels so they can be rolled out under the glittering night sky. The atmosphere is pure, rustic, and yet subtly luxurious. As it is so remote, the minimum stay is two nights. In the green season, the camp operates weather-dependently, and in some cases guests may need to be accommodated at Bomani, Camelthorn, or Nehimba instead.
Activities and Excursions at Jozibanini Tented Camp
Guests can enjoy classic game drives or guided walks during the day. One of the camp’s most unique offerings is mountain biking along elephant-trodden paths through ancient fossil sand dunes – a thrilling way to explore Hwange. Another highlight is the Look-Up Hide, an underground viewing hide at the waterhole, offering close-up wildlife encounters both day and night (especially magical under a full moon). The Ngamo Community Experience also includes a visit to the local village school, although school visits are not possible in April, August, and December, as well as in mid-January during school holidays. In the green season, from January to March, canoeing on the Ngamo Plains may be available – this is weather-dependent and only offered on special request.
