Nestled in a private concession in the heart of Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park, Somalisa Expeditions offers an exclusive blend of unspoilt wilderness and understated luxury. Surrounded by acacia groves and nestled along a seasonal riverbed, the camp enjoys a particularly authentic bush setting. A unique highlight is the Somalisa Sleep-Out, an unforgettable overnight experience in a treehouse overlooking a waterhole, where guests can spend the night beneath the African stars.
Accommodation at Somalisa Expeditions
The camp consists of six spacious Meru-style tents, all raised on wooden platforms. Two of these tents are interlinked, making them ideal for families. Each tent features an en-suite bathroom with a flush toilet, washbasin, and both indoor and outdoor showers. Guests can also enjoy mosquito nets, charging facilities for electronic devices, tea and coffee stations, and a private deck with sweeping views of the bush. At the heart of the camp lies an open-plan main area with a lounge, bar, and dining deck. A distinctive feature is the small swimming pool, which not only provides refreshment for guests on hot days but also regularly attracts elephants that come to drink.
Activities and tours at Somalisa Expeditions
In addition to classic activities such as game drives and guided bush walks, Somalisa offers a truly unforgettable adventure: the Somalisa Sleep-Out. This experience allows two guests to spend a night beneath the stars in a raised treehouse-style deck overlooking a waterhole. The sleep-out is seasonal and weather-dependent and is generally available to guests staying at least three nights in one of the three Somalisa camps. For many, it is the highlight of their safari—a night under Africa’s brilliant starlit sky, surrounded by the sounds of the wild and the close presence of elephants and other animals visiting the waterhole. The deck is furnished with a king-size bed made from raw acacia wood, draped with a mosquito net, and equipped with a small seating area for sundowners or morning coffee. A toilet is discreetly located beneath the deck, ensuring a level of comfort despite the remote setting. Guests are transferred by private safari vehicle to the deck in the evening and collected the next morning. Throughout the night, a guide remains nearby to guarantee safety while allowing complete privacy.
