The Siding is located at Impofu Siding near Dete, just a few kilometres from Hwange Main Camp and directly beside the railway line between Bulawayo and Victoria Falls. The location combines bushveld, wildlife and railway history in an unusual setting. The camp takes its name from the nearby railway siding. One of the distinctive features of the property is a large Rhodesian teak tree beside the camp.
Accommodation at The Siding
The Siding offers five rustic dome tents. Three freestanding tents are furnished with beds, bedside tables, reading lamps and power outlets. The family accommodation consists of two interconnected tents, each with two single beds and a shared lounge, accommodating up to four guests. The ablution facilities are separate and shared, with two showers, two toilets and four washbasins.
A communal area with cooking facilities is available for self-catering. Guests can prepare their own meals using either a gas braai or a wood-fired braai. For groups of four or more, full board (excluding drinks) or a fully inclusive option with two game drives per day can also be booked. An additional firepit and a small swimming pool complete the facilities. Daily camp service also includes cleaning and washing up.
Just around 480 metres southeast of The Siding is The Track Shack, a campsite for travellers with their own camping equipment. It offers twelve campsites, with a choice of private sites with their own ablution facilities or sites with shared washrooms. Each campsite has its own water connection, braai area and firepit. All sites can accommodate up to eight guests, and a minimum stay of two nights applies to both options.
Activities and tours at The Siding
The proximity to Hwange National Park allows for game drives as well as wildlife and birdwatching. At the same time, the railway line between Bulawayo and Victoria Falls, which runs directly past the camp, is an integral part of the location's character. Train spotters can watch passing trains, which form part of the surroundings alongside the natural sounds of the bush. In the evening, the firepits provide an opportunity to end the day beneath the African night sky.
